California Bill to Streamline Installation of Solar Panels Signed Into Law

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law a bill that streamlines the process for installing solar rooftop systems at homes.

The measure puts much of the application process online, allowing for solar companies to eliminate paperwork and man hours, Assemblyman Al Muratsuchi (D-Torrance), the sponsor of AB 2188, said Wednesday.

Consumers could save up to $4,000 per installation.

The law goes into effect Jan. 1.

Torrance homeowner Terry Finn had solar panels installed on his roof in July. They should save him about $150 per month in power bills - once they're operational.

Despite taking only a day to install, the company that put the panels in said it often takes more than a month to get paperwork, engineering permits and inspections squared away because each city has different rules.

"My bill sets a statewide checklist and streamlines the process," Muratsuchi said.
