California Eyes New Power Source: Gridlocked Roads

The California Energy Commission is investing $2 million to study whether piezoelectric crystals can be used to produce electricity from gridlocked roads.

You can't help but notice how bad LA's traffic is.

On average, motorists spend 81 hours stuck in it each year.

But what if such a universal "bad" thing could be turned into something truly "good"?

The California Energy Commission is investing $2 million to study whether piezoelectric crystals can be used to produce electricity from the mechanical energy created by vehicles driving on roads, NBC4's media partner KPCC reports.

"Piezo electric transducers" or crystals create small bursts of energy when compressed under foot. Place them under freeways and that energy is multiplied millions of times. The more traffic there is, the more energy generated.
