California Girl Hit by Car Walking to Bus Stop Awarded $36M

Her attorneys say she'll require around-the-clock nursing care for the rest of her life.

A California jury has awarded $36.1 million to the family of an 11-year-old girl who was seriously injured when she was struck by a car while crossing the street to board a school bus.

Attorneys for Isabella Escamilla Sanchez say the San Bernardino jury reached a verdict Thursday afternoon.

Sanchez was walking to a bus stop in October 2012 when she was hit by a car in Highland.

Her attorneys say she suffered a traumatic brain injury and fractures to her neck, arms and legs. They say she'll require around-the-clock nursing care for the rest of her life.

Sanchez's family sued the school bus company, Durham School Services, alleging its employees failed to prevent mid-street crossings and violated company policies.

Durham School Services spokeswoman Kate Walden declined to comment.
