California ISO Issues Flex Alert

State power grid operators asked residents to conserve power into Thursday evening during another hot day in Southern California.

A Flex Alert was declared for the peak power use window of 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Cal ISO, the state's independent system operator, issues the alerts when the power grid is stressed by high demand during hot days.

"Electricity supplies statewide are expected to be tight because of high summer temperatures driving up demand, power plant outages, and transmission line import capacity reductions," the agency said in a statement. "Power imports may be limited today because of high temperatures in neighboring states."

The alerts are calls for voluntary conservation to help balance supply and demand.

Conservation Tips

  • Set thermostat at 78 or higher and turn off, if away
  • Cool with fans and draw drapes
  • Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances
  • Use major appliances in morning or late evening

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive-heat warning for a vast swath of California's southeastern region. Heat advisories are posted for the high deserts, Coachella Valley and the Anza Borrego desert.

Coachella Valley residents, who last week endured scorching temperatures that triggered a heat advisory, might see temperatures well into triple digits. Highs of 110 to 112 degrees are expected for Coachella Valley cities each day this week, with Thursday and Friday expected to bring the hottest temperatures prior to a "minor cooling" period next week.

The NWS issued a heat advisory for Riverside County last week, amid sweltering conditions that included a new minimum temperature set for Indio on Friday.
