If the students at Caltech are walking around right now with the chests puffed out, they are likely celebrating their school's placement as second in the world in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
The London newspaper has ranked the top 200 schools worldwide and a number of local universities have fared well. Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., got the top ranking in the poll.
Caltech rose to the second spot after being considered 10th a year ago.
In Westwood, Bruins may be chanting "We're No. 11."
UCLA came in three spots behind Berkeley, which placed eighth.
Here's how other Southern California schools fared:
UC Santa Barbara came in 29th; UC San Diego ranked 32nd; UC Irvine was 49th and the University of Southern California was 73rd. UC Riverside placed 117th.
The universities in the Times of London survey were rated in five categories: research influence; teaching/learning environment; research volume, income and reputation; international diversity of staff and studio ratios; and industry income.
The Times is just one of a number of organizations that attempt to rank the world's institutions of higher learning.
According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the Times list is unique because it attempts to ranks the schools on quantifiable rather than subjective values.
