Fire restrictions in the San Bernardino National Forest are being scaled back as the weather cools.

Effective immediately, wood and charcoal fires are allowed in designated campfire rings inside developed picnic areas, campgrounds and sites that require special use permits, according to U.S. Forest Service spokesman John Miller.

Campfires are not permitted in "Yellow Post" campsites, which are generally located away from major trails, and campfire permits will continue to be required for a visitor to use propane or gas stoves, as well as lanterns, outside of developed recreation sites.

"With the milder weather, I want to remind folks to continue to be fire safe and vigilant year-round," said San Bernardino National Forest Supervisor Jeanne Wade Evans.

Ongoing restrictions include:

  • no smoking except in developed recreation sites or inside an enclosed vehicle; and
  • no recreational shooting except at public firing ranges or by special use permit, including for hunting;
  • no use of machinery, including chainsaws, generators, motorcycles or all-terrain vehicles, without a ranger-approved "spark arrestor" attached to exhaust outlets.

Miller said visitors planning a trip the preserve should always call ahead to check on local conditions and restrictions.
