Candlelight Vigil Held in Honor of Cyclist Killed in Hit-and-Run

Steven Garcia was memorialized at the intersection where the fatal crash occurred.

Mourners gathered in Montebello Saturday night for a candlelight vigil honoring a cyclist who was killed in a hit-and-run crash earlier this week.

Steven Garcia, 24, died Friday morning from his injuries after he was hit by a car around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night, according to LA County Coroner Lt. David Smith.

Ghost Bikes LA, and organization that memorializes cyclists killed on the road, organized the candlelight vigil in Garcia’s honor at the intersection of Bluff Road and Whittier Boulevard, where the fatal crash occurred.

The organization’s name comes from the painted white bikes that volunteers leave at fatal cyclist crash sites to remind drivers to be more careful on the road.

At the 8 p.m. vigil, mourners left candles, flowers and signs near the bike painted in Garcia's memory.

Supporters have also established a crowdsourcing fund to help Garcia’s family with funeral costs.

Montebello police were still searching for the person responsible for the fatal accident.

No description of the car involved in the hit-and-run was available Saturday.
