Suspected DUI Crash Into Living Room Shocks Homeowner

Homeowner Raul Chavez was in his kitchen preparing coffee when he heard the pre-dawn crash.

A man was arrested on suspicion of DUI Thursday after the SUV he was driving crashed through the living room of a home in Norwalk, sheriff's officials said.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to a call at 5:15 a.m. in the 13000 block of Elmcroft Avenue in Norwalk and discovered a sport utility vehicle entered the house.

Homeowner Raul Chavez was in his kitchen preparing coffee when he heard the pre-dawn crash.

"I heard a major pound," said Chavez. "My first instinct was there's an accident outside. So when I turn to find out where the accident was, it's in my house. It's in my living room."

The driver, identified as 27-year-old Joseph Ortega, slammed through the concrete wall of the house, leaving debris scattered throughout the lawn.

"He was pretty much leaning over the wheel and so some neighbors came and pulled him out and laid him on the floor," said Chavez.

Ortega was not injured but was taken to a hospital. He was booked into jail on a less-serious misdemeanor DUI charge. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 24, 2015.

No one else was hurt.
