Witness Felipa Santana was at a crowded bus terminal off the 110 Freeway under the 105 Freeway when the driver of a car swerved to avoid hitting a bus before plowing into a group of passengers. Kim Baldonado reports from downtown Los Angeles.
A vehicle slammed into a bus terminal under a freeway in South LA Tuesday afternoon, injuring seven people, according to Los Angeles City Fire officials.
Five men and one woman were transported to local hospitals and were listed in critical but stable condition Tuesday night.
Another man sustained minor injuries, fire officials said.
The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. at the busway that serves the Silver Line off the northbound 110 freeway under the eastbound 105 freeway, said Officer Tatiana Sauquillo with CHP.
The motorist reportedly drove into the bus lane and swerved to avoid hitting the back of a bus, colliding with a crowd waiting at the bus stop.
News Chopper 4 recorded footage of the suspected driver undergoing a sobriety field test conducted by CHP officers. The results of that test were not immediately revealed.
Several passengers said they've seen other drivers go through the bus lane.
"Once by accident, I saw a car go through, I know it was an accident," said Marie Thomas, bus passenger. "Normally cars do pretty well. Today wasn't that day."
"I always stay at the back by the wall," said bus passenger Felipa Santana. "Since I saw a motorcycle crashing, I had a feeling that something is going to happen."
The accident caused the Silver Line freeway express bus to be rerouted onto surface streets, causing significant delays during the afternoon commute.
