High Winds Uproot Giant Tree

A storm brings high winds and possible rain and snow to parts of Southern California

Karyn Vandehey got a rude wake up call on Monday morning.

A neighbor pounded on her Palmdale home saying a giant tree uprooted and toppled onto her car.

“This is crazy,” she said. “Tree fell on my car … uprooted out of the ground.

“I’m thankful it didn’t fall the other way. Me and my kids, we’re OK.”

It was an early casualty on a day when 50 mph winds prompted a wind advisory for LA County mountains and the Antelope Valley as a cold storm wedged over Southern California.

Rain was expected for some parts of Southern California and up to 2 inches of snow was expected to fall on mountainsides as low as 5,000 feet.

Around the region, light showers were likely in the morning near downtown LA with temperatures forecast in the lower to mid 60s and winds gusting to 30 mph.

Low temps in LA were expected to be in the lower to mid 50s.

Valley areas could also see showers with high temperatures in the lower 60s and winds kicking up in the afternoon to 15 mph. Low temps in the valleys could range in the mid 40s to lower 50s.

High desert temperatures could drop overnight to the upper 30s to mid 40s.

Vandehey, meanwhile, was going to have to get a ride from her mother to work and figure out how to get the tree removed from her front yard.

She contacted officials in the city of Palmdale and they're not going to do it.

"Apparently this road is private," she said. "They can’t do anything about the tree.”
