East LA Carjacker Caught Hiding in Tree: LASD

The man was captured after a perimeter was set up around 2nd and Soto streets

An armed carjacking suspect was caught hiding in a tree after he ran away from deputies in East Los Angeles early Tuesday.

The man was captured in a residential area near South Fickett Street before 3:25 a.m. after a perimeter was set up around 2nd and Soto streets, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman said. 

It was established after a man was carjacked at gunpoint at Hammel Street and McDonnell Avenue at around 11:53 p.m. Monday. Deputies found the vehicle 2nd and Soto streets, and when they approached a man jumped out and fled.

After setting up a perimeter, police dogs were called in as the lawmen conducted a search.

The man, who is in his 20s, was later found in the tree, and when he was taken into custody a gun was found in a backpack, which was found nearby, according to officials.

Investigators said the person caught has been identified as the carjacker, and he faces a carjacking charge.
