An out-of-control bus smashed through a fire hydrant, collided with utility poles, crossed a median and finally came to a stop outside a Carson home on Wednesday morning.

The bus driver, a 47-year-old woman, died at the scene, possibly of cardiac arrest, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Bruce Borihanh.

Investigators will have to determine if the woman's cardiac arrest preceded the crash, Borihanh said. The victim's supervisor told police that the driver had a physical and there was no indication of any medical problems.

The crash happened about 5:45 a.m. near the intersection of 220th Street and Normandie Avenue. None of the four passengers aboard the bus was hurt, Borihanh said.

Some residents in the area lost power, and authorities had to shut off a water supply to curb a geyser caused by the sheared fire hydrant. By noon, crews were still working to restore power for about 2,400 DWP customers.

The bus involved in the crash was a City of Gardena municipal bus, said Supervisor Bernard Peters of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
