Mother Questioned in 1-Year-Old Girl's Death

A second girl, 5, remained in serious, but stable, condition

A mother of two girls was questioned by police Wednesday morning after the death of her 1 year old, who apparently drowned at the family's South Los Angeles residence, according to police.

Police responded to the residence -- a converted garage in the 900 block of West 50th Place -- early Wednesday morning. Two girls were hospitalized in grave condition, but one of the girls was pronounced dead later Wednesday morning at the hospital.

The second girl, a 5-year-old, remained in serious, but stable, condition early Wednesday afternoon.

Police were questioning the mother.

Neighbors told NBC4 the father told them he believed the mother tried to drown both girls. The Los Angeles Time reported that he told police he returned from the grocery store to find his wife attempting to drown the girls in a bath tub.

Firefighters who responded to the 911 call found the girls unconscious in the converted garage behind the main house, according to the LAFD. Firefighters administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the girls were transported to a hospital with their father.
