Child Dies in Crash, Mother Arrested on DUI Charges

The 7-year-old boy was not wearing a seatbelt and died as a result of injuries from the crash, CHP said.

A 7-year-old boy died and at least three people were hospitalized in a crash that shut down a stretch of Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County Wednesday, officials said.

The crash happened just after 7 p.m. on PCH near Las Posas Road in Point Mugu, the CHP said.

Latoya Najar, 34, of Camarillo was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang north on PCH approaching Las Posas Road, the CHP said. The car left the roadway and struck a tree.

The Mustang was only equipped with four seatbelts, but there may have been five passengers inside, CHP said. The 7-year-old boy was not wearing a seatbelt, CHP said.

Two additional children of Najar's as well as 33-year-old Vanessa Chavez were also in the car. Chavez suffered multiple fractures and facial injuries, and a 12-year-old boy suffered a broken arm, the CHP said.

Najar showed signs of intoxication, the CHP said. Najar was arrested and faces felony DUI charges. Additional charges are pending.
