Superfan Clipper Darrell Says Team Asked Him to Drop “Clipper” Name

Several Clipper players expressed their support for their most loyal fan

LA Clippers players reacted with shock and dismay Wednesday after learning that their most loyal fan has been asked to stop using the team's name in his moniker.

That's because -- according to a post on his website -- the team has asked Darrell Bailey, or, as most people know him, Clipper Darrell, to drop the "Clipper" from his name.

Bailey, a season-ticket holder who drives a red and blue painted "Clipper" car, is a fixture at home games, often starting chants while wearing his signature red and blue suit.

"It is with great sadness … that I have been told by Clipper management they no longer want me to be Clipper Darrell," Bailey wrote on his blog. "I am devastated!!!!"

He's not the only one.

Some Clippers took to their Twitter pages to respond to the news.

"Bring back #ClipperDarrell," tweeted Blake Griffin.

Bailey, 39, was the top trending topic in Los Angeles on Twitter as of 3:30 p.m.

Calls to the Clippers were not immediately returned.

In the past, Bailey claims Dallas Maverick's owner Mark Cuban offered him a job, after being impressed with his "booming voice in the stands."

Here's a recent interview with Bailey, who express his enthusiasm over the team's 2012 season.
