A construction worker is in critical condition after he was impaled by rebar at a construction site in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday afternoon.
The man, who was working atop a proposed 49-story high-rise under construction on Hill Street, was impaled by at least two pieces of rebar around 2:43 p.m., fire officials said.
The 27-year-old was approximately 20 feet above ground when a panel fell on top of him. At least two pieces of steel bar impaled the man's torso.
The Los Angeles Fire Department used a saw to cut the rebar which remained embedded and lowered the man to street level using a litter basket.
The injured worker was taken to a trauma center in critical condition.
The Division of Occupational Safety and Health, better known as CalOSHA, is investigating.
A notice posted at the construction site listed the contractor as Onni Contracting.
