LA Cops Seek Gangsters in Mayan Club Shooting

The gunman was described as Hispanic, 5-foot-7, 180 pounds, and wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. He used a small caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Police on Sunday sought help to identify suspected gang members responsible for a shooting that left a man dead and three others wounded outside the Mayan nightclub in downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting happened before 3 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Hill Street and Olympic Boulevard.

Witnesses told police a group of men began arguing and shouting gang names outside the club before the shooting.

One man got a gun from a car in a nearby parking lot and started shooting.

“There were dozens of people around when this happened and we’re sure someone knows who the shooter is,” said LAPD Lt. Paul Vernon, commanding officer of the Central Detective Division. “But, typically, few people come forward when gangs are involved, but stepping up is the best way to reduce gang activity.”

One man, who has not yet been identified, was shot in the head and died later at a local hospital.

A second man was shot in the leg and is expected to survive, police said.

Two others had minor gunshot wounds.

Police said none of the victims cooperated with police.

Detectives recovered several bullet casings from the street and canvassed the area for video footage.

“In the age of video phones, we hope someone might come forward with video of the shooting, or a description of the car the suspect left in,” Vernon said.

The gunman was described as Hispanic, 5-foot-7, 180 pounds, and wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. He used a small caliber semi-automatic pistol, Vernon said.

It was among the latest in a spate of weekend violence.

Police were investigating separate shootings that left a woman dead and wounded four others since Thursday across Los Angeles County.
