Covina Community Grieves Officer Killed in Crash

The Covina Police Department is trying to get video from Corder’s motorcycle camera that could give them information about what happened.

The death of a 28-year-old motorcycle officer has a Southern California community grieving and a police department looking for answers.

Covina police officer Jordan Corder died while on-duty Tuesday after his motorcycle collided with an SUV near Citrus and Puente avenues in Covina.

Wednesday, the 60-person police force held a flag lowering ceremony dedicated to fallen officers and their families. Flowers, artwork and notes fill a memorial in honor of Corder, who was a member of the department for seven years and had been recently appointed to the traffic unit.

"We’re citizens of Covina so it’s a tight-knit community, we feel close to our police department," Covina resident Patty Hynes said.

Covina Police Chief Kim Raney spent time with Corder’s family Wednesday, including Corder’s father, who is a 30-year retired captain of the police force. Raney said the family was "doing surprisingly well."

The Covina Police Department is trying to get video from Corder’s motorcycle camera that could give them information about what happened.

"Based upon speed, the camera will activate. If the emergency equipment on the motorcycle is activated, the camera system will activate or if there’s a traffic collision, the camera system should activate and capture the last 30 seconds of movement," Raney said.

Police say Corder may have been trying to make a traffic stop of another motorcyclist when he was hit by the SUV that was attempting to make a left turn. Video from the camera on the motorcycle so far showed no data and was being sent to a lab for further review. Police are also analyzing information from other cameras in the area to see whether Corder was trying to make a traffic stop in the moments prior to the crash.

"All indications so far is that this appears to be a tragic accident," Raney said.

Jonthan Godoy said he knew Corder and his wife, Kelsey. He said the loss has been "really hard" and that the effort now is to keep Corder’s memory alive.

Corder is the second officer to die while on duty for the Covina Police Department. In 2006, Sgt. Scott Hanson was killed in a traffic collision about a block away from Tuesday’s crash.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. CHP and the district attorney will determine whether any charges will be filed.
