IndyCar Champ Franchitti to Join Long Beach Walk of Fame

The driver and team owners Gerald Forsythe and Kevin Kalkhoven will be inducted in the Walk of Fame

Four-time IndyCar Series champ Dario Franchitti and two team owners will be inducted into the Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame Thursday as event get underway before this weekend's racing.

Franchitti, who won the GPLB in 2009, and team owners Gerald Forsythe and Kevin Kalkhoven will be inducted into the Walk of Fame at 11 a.m. on South Pine Avenue in front of the Convention Center.

The event is free.

Franchitti started 11 races in Long Beach. He is the seventh on the list of all-time Indy Car race winners with 31 victories.

Franchitti announced his retirement in November following a violent crash in an IndyCar race in Houston. The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner suffered a spine injury and suffered a concussion.

Doctors advised it would be too dangerous to continue racing after the injuries.

Forsythe owned the 2003 and 2004 teams that helped Paul Tracy to victory. His team also have won four Atlantic Championship races in Long Beach and the 2003 CART series title.

Kalkhoven was the winning owner at the 2008 GPLB with driver Will Power. His team also captured the 2005 Atlantic Championship.

Kalkhoven and Forsythe teamed with Paul Gentilozzi to create the Champ Car World Series after CART's demise in 2003. Kalkhoven and Forstyhe purchased the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach in 2005.
