Simi Valley Man Sentenced for Extortion on Dating App OkCupid

A 20-year-old Simi Valley man was sentenced Friday for attempting to extort a woman he met through dating app OkCupid.

Alex Scott Roberts pleaded guilty to felony attempted extortion and misdemeanor unauthorized distribution of sexual images in May, according to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office.

In addition to serving 364 days in jail, Roberts is required to get sex offender counseling and pay more the $2,500 in fines.

Roberts met the woman through the app in August 2015. He sent her photos he said were of himself, but were really of another man. He then requested she send him intimate photos.

The photos the woman sent were revealing but not nude images, and using the false identity, Roberts demanded nude photos.

When the woman refused, Roberts posted the intimate photos so that her family and friends could see them, later claiming that his OkCupid account had been hacked, authorities said.

Roberts is set to begin his sentence in July.
