“Day O' Fun” for CA Delegates to GOP Convention

Wednesday was a work day for some at the Republican convention in Tampa, but for many members of the California delegation, it would start and end with parties.

For GOP vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan, Wednesday at the Republican National Convention in Tampa was all about work.

Ryan toured the convention hall, examined the podium and prepared the speech he would deliver Wednesday night.

But for many members of California’s delegation to the event, the day started late, with brunch on the beach, and would finish with a night of parties.

Late night speeches, political meetings, concerts and not a few parties kept delegates up late Tuesday, a spokeswoman said, so activities Wednesday were scheduled at a leisurely pace.

Party activists were invited to brunch on the beach at the hotel in St. Petersburg where about 700 delegates, alternates and hangers-on are staying throughout the week of the convention, said Julie Hooper, a spokeswoman for the delegation.

One attendee, Tony Kvaric of San Diego, posted a picture of the brunch on the social media site Ow.ly.

In keeping with the GOP’s theme of showing that its members are descended from immigrants, Kravic wrote on his Twitter bio that he is “Coratian by blood, Swedish by birth and American by choice.”

Organizers of the brunch called their festivities the “Day O’ Fun, BBQ & Games on the Beach.” A party planned for the evening, after Ryan’s speech, promised a “Night O’ Comfort.”

To be held in the hotel foyer, the “Night O’ Comfort” was planned to be a “small, casual reception,” with a live band and food, Hooper said.

More parties were planned for Thursday night after nominee Mitt Romney takes the stage to make his acceptance speech.

“We’re thinking of having something offsite,” Hooper said. “Kind of like a victory celebration.”
