Dog's Body Found Tied to Shovel on Marina Del Rey Beach

An animal cruelty investigation is underway after the body of a dog was found tied to a shovel on a Marina Del Rey beach, officials said.

A group of people rowing on Mother's Beach made the grim discovery around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff Department. The group came across a shovel sticking out of the water and then realized a dog was tied to it.

The dog, who had identification tags, appeared to have drowned after the shovel was buried deep in the sand under the water, authorities said.

The County of Los Angeles Animal Control is leading the investigation. No suspect description was immediately available.

The dog's cause of death has not yet been determined.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's department at 310.582.6000.
