Deputies Recovering After Patrol Car Goes Over Cliff

Two Los Angeles County Sheriffs are recovering after their patrol car was struck from behind by another vehicle, sending it over a cliff and crashing on to the beach below the Pacific Coast Highway.

The patrol car landed upright, with its front end in the sand, and all of its doors jammed. Police said the deputies seatbelts saved them from being ejected onto the rocks.

The crash occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday in the 19400 block of Pacific Coast Highway between Topanga Beach and Las Tunas Canyon Road.

Firefighters were able to free 51-year-old Jeffrey Miner and 47-year-old James Millage, both of whom were taken to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Minor sustained a fractured wrist. He was released Sunday and is recovering at home, said Sgt. Vivian May of the sheriff's Lost Hills station. Millage was still hospitalized and may have some fractures to his back, she said.

Police said the driver, 44-year-old Woodland Hills resident Mark Liebrecht, was intoxicated when he crashed his dark gray 550 Series BMW into the officers' car.

Liebrecht was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving. Police said he posted $100,000 bail and was released Saturday morning.
