Man Fatally Shot by Deputies in Santa Clarita

A man died Thursday night after a deputy-involved shooting in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

The shooting occurred around 7:50 p.m. in a residential area near Nathan Hill and Shangri-La Drives, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Rouzan.

The shooting happened after a deputy saw a vehicle that matched the description of a car from an "assault with a deadly weapon" which occurred Wednesday, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The deputy attempted a traffic stop and driver immediately exited the vehicle, began "yelling profanities" at the deputy, and appeared to be challenging him to a fight, according to the news release.

The deputy issued several commands for the driver to raise his hands in the air, but the man refused to comply. After issuing more commands, the man reached behind his back, appearing to retrieve a weapon. The officer then fired his weapon at the man, according to a news release.

The man was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release.

Deputies recovered a knife at the scene.

The man was not yet identified by sheriff's deputies.
