A man on a motorcycle with flashing red and blue lights pulled over a motorist Tuesday in Lawndale, then took off when the driver asked the man where he worked.

The apparently bogus traffic stop occurred at 147th Street and Inglewood Avenue. The driver told deputies the man had a badge that appeared to be fake.

"Ask for identification," said Sgt. Mark Reyes. "If you have any doubts, ask to speak to a supervisor."

The man was wearing a tan uniform shirt and green pants, similar to the colors worn by LA County sheriff's deputies.

Anyone with information can call the South Los Angeles Station  Detective Bureau at 323-820-6700

More advice from the LA County Sheriff's Department:

  • Try to stop in a well lit area, or in an area that can easily be seen by the general public.
  • Take note of any unusual or odd uniform markings.
  • Be aware of any strange requests or overly personal questions being asked.
