Deputy Injured and Suspect Fatally Shot Near South Los Angeles

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene

A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was struck by a vehicle and a suspect was shot to death by deputies near South Los Angeleson Friday afternoon.

The deputy-involved shooting and collision happened about 2:30 p.m. in the 11400 block of South Vermont Street near Imperial Highway, Deputy Kim Manatt of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Headquarters Bureau said.

The area is in unincorporated Athens near a Green Line Metro station (map).

The deputy was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in unknown condition, but a sheriff's spokesperson said the officer was conscious and breathing.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Sheriff's Department news release.

According to witnesses, the suspect was arguing with a young woman who called police to the scene.

Aerial video of the scene showed a body next to a maroon sedan in a parking lot, as shown below.

Authorities were keeping media from the scene.
