Newhall Barricade Ends in Man's Arrest

A man wanted for allegedly trying to run down a sheriff's deputy, leading to an hours-long search, was arrested after barricading himself inside a home in northern Los Angeles County, officials said.

A sheriff's department SWAT team was called Monday night to the home in the 25000 block of Vermont Drive in Newhall, where the man, identified as Jesse Tucker, was holed up, sheriff's officials said.

Deputies feared guns could be inside the home.

The Tucker was taken into custody after SWAT members made their way into the home about 10:45 p.m.

Earlier Monday, Tucker was driving a stolen gardener's truck in the Santa Clarita area tried to run over a deputy, who then opened fire on the man, deputies said.

"Obviously he's quite dangerous. It forces a deputy to get into a shooting," Sheriff's Capt. Roosevelt Johnson said.

The driver then fled on foot into a wash area near where the confrontation took place.

At least one other man was arrested in connection with the incident, deputies said. The man surrounded by deputies was taken into custody, aerial footage by NewsChopper4 showed.

No one was injured in the shooting, which took place at about 8:45 a.m. in the 21300 block of Oakriver Lane, a dead-end street, in Newhall, deputies said.

The driver of the truck remains on the loose, deputies said. A sheriff's helicopter circled the neighborhood demanding that the suspect surrender.

Nearby schools McGrath Elementary and Our Lady of Perpetual Help were briefly put on lockdown as the search proceeded.

Neighbor Queen Carlos had left her home to run an early morning errand. She returned to find a sheriff’s helicopter telling residents there was a felony suspect on the loose and asking the man to surrender.

"Now we have to like, really, really watch out and see who knocks on the door," Carlos said.

The gardener's truck, a Ford F-150, had been parked with the engine running and the doors unlocked before it was stolen, deputies said.
