San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Hit During Shootout

Investigators were trailing rape suspect

A San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering after being shot in the leg during a shootout that left a suspect dead.

It happened just after 10:00 am Thursday in the Stater Bros. shopping center near Highland and Del Rosa avenues in San Bernardino.
“I hear a lot of shots, it sounded like the magazines were emptied,” said witness Andrew Clarrett.
The suspect was being followed by detectives in connection with a rape-and-robbery investigation that occurred March 22 in Yucaipa.
When the suspect saw the deputies, he ran, then turned and opened fire, investigators said.
The wounded deputy’s name has not been released. He is recovering at home.
