Deputy Shoots Man Dead During Firefight in Hemet

A deputy shot a man dead during a firefight in Hemet Friday night.

The shootout happened after anti-gang task force members stopped a car at Girard Street and Acacia Avenue at around 8 p.m, a Riverside County Sheriff's Department spokesman said.

During the stop a passenger allegedly got out of the car and started shooting at officers. One of the deputies returned fire, fatally wounding the man.

No officers were injured during the shootout and the driver of the car was detained.
