Disabled Car Explodes on Freeway in Collision With Bus: CHP

A tour bus plowed into a disabled car waiting for assistance on the 91 Freeway in Bellflower Sunday morning, causing the car to explode in flames, authorities said.

The driver and passenger of the car, a Nissan Maxima whose electrical system failed, jumped across the highway's center divider to avoid the bus, on its way to Los Angeles from Harrah's Casino in San Diego, according to the California Highway Patrol. Five of the bus's 19 passengers complained of minor injuries but none were taken to a hospital.

The crash occurred in the HOV lane near the 605 Freeway at 12:40 a.m., three minutes after the Nissan's occupants reported to the CHP their vehicle was disabled.

Fire completely gutted the Nissan; the bus was allowed to continue to LA, the CHP said.
