A 2-year-old boy who was allegedly beaten by the boyfriend of a babysitter in Norwalk was taken off life support Wednesday night, just days after doctors declared him brain dead, according to this mother.
"They pronounced him dead since Monday," the toddler’s mother, Karen Galvez, said.
Her son, Steven Figueroa, was disconnected from life support Wednesday night. Before her son was taken off life support, Galvez said she had hoped doctors would reconsider the move.
"I want them to leave him one more day, leave him hooked up to the machines, but I don’t know if they’re going to be able to do it," Galvez said. "They just want me to donate his organs."
Galvez left her son with a babysitter on Sunday. According to Galvez, the babysitter left and went to the theater, leaving the toddler behind with her boyfriend, 23-year-old Elder Matamoros.
"I trusted her because I had to go to work," Galvez said. "She lied to me, telling me she took the baby to the theater, which is a lie, she left without him. She left the baby. And (her boyfriend) hit him on the face just because he threw up, the baby threw up."
Deputies had responded to reports of the baby not breathing Sunday. When they arrived, the boy was unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be blunt force trauma, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The child was taken to Miller’s Children’s Hospital.
A memorial was held for the child on Wednesday. Matamoros was holding the baby and asking for help at the time of the incident on Sunday, neighbors said.
"He was asking, ‘Hey can you call 911 for me,’" neighbor Rafael Colon said. "The baby was unconscious, there was no movement, no nothing. Baby’s eyes were rolled, I was checking if it was breathing and it wasn’t breathing at all."
Matamoros has been charged with murder and is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 21
