Dodgers Give Back Game, Lose to Giants, 4-1, on Vin Scully Night at Dodger Stadium

They didn't win for Vin.

Gorkys Hernandez hit the game-winning double in the top of the 11^th and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1, on Vin Scully Night at Dodger Stadium.

The Hall of Fame broadcaster was inducted into the Dodgers' Ring of Honor during a pregame ceremony in left field. Scully joins 10 other Dodger legends, nine of which are also Hall of Famers whose numbers are retired at the Ravine.

The Dodgers scored their lone run of the game on a costly error by second baseman Joe Panik. Panik dropped a fly ball from Yasiel Puig, which may-or-may-not have landed in foul territory, and the Wild Horse scampered to third on the misplay.

Two batters later, Chris Taylor singled to right field to give the Dodgers the lead.

The lead was short-lived as San Francisco tied the game in the top of the eighth, cashing in on a mistake by Dodgers reliever, Ross Stripling.

"It was a weird series of events that led to the tying run," said Stripling. "It was frustrating, but that's the way it goes."

After a leadoff single by Hunter Pence, Stripling bounced a ball into the dirt to Buster Posey that rolled all the way to the backstop, allowing Pence to take third on the play. Two pitches later, he scored on a groundout to second base.

"I thought Utley was going to be in on the Posey ball, but I guess with two strikes he [Roberts] had moved him back," Stripling said of the play that scored the tying run. "Off the bat I was like, 'heck yeah!' then I look and he's playing in his normal spot. It kinda stinks."

"When you're at home, you try and play for the tie to still have at-bats to extend the game," said Roberts. "Versus nobody out, play the infield in, a seeing-eye [single] gets through and the inning keeps going and you could lose the game. I felt like with the matchup I'd rather extend the game."

The game went to extra innings, the third time this season the Dodgers have played more baseball, and each time has been against the Giants.

For the second consecutive appearance, left-hander Grant Dayton allowed at least two runs, as he surrendered three in the top of the 11^th to give San Francisco the win, and the series.

Dayton had made eight previous appearances on the season without allowing run before allowing five runs in his last two games.

Juio Urias fired five scoreless innings in just his second start of the season, but did not factor in the decision as he left the game with both teams deadlocked in a scoreless tie.

"I wasted a lot of pitches early tonight and got behind in the count a lot," said Urias of his outing. "I kept attacking. Thank God I was able to get out of some tough situations."

Jeff Samardzija started the game for the Giants and had his best pitching performance of the season.

The San Francisco right-hander known as "The Shark," allowed one unearned run on three hits with no walks and eleven strikeouts in eight strong innings.

"What a beauty he threw tonight," said Giants' manager Bruce Bochy of his starting pitcher. "He was on top of his game and had a great look about him tonight. He was maniacally focused."

Despite the loss for the Dodgers, the night belonged to Vin Scully who brought fans to their feet before the game with his classic line, "It's Time for Dodger Baseball." The first 40,000 fans also received a commemorative Vin Scully microphone and listened to many of Vin's legendary calls played on the video board throughout the game.
