Puig Surprises Little Leaguers

The Dodgers' Yasiel Puig surprised a group of children on a little league baseball team in Elysian Park, pitching for them and playing around a bit before signing autographs. Fred Roggin reports for NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on Oct. 24, 2013.

Dodgers star Yasiel Puig turned an Elysian Park baseball diamond into a field of dreams for a group of young players when the outfielder made a surprise appearance at the Northeast Los Angeles Little League practice.

Puig, wearing a polo shirt, cargo shorts and high-top sneakers, showed up unannounced and took the mound. He tossed pitches to the starstruck young players and stayed around after practice to take pictures with families and sign autographs.

Puig spent about a half hour at the ballpark north of downtown Los Angeles near Dodger Stadium.

"We were just practicing with my team, and then my coach was like, "It's Puig," said 8-year-old Daniel Vegara, a coach's son, in a video posted to YouTube after practice. "We all jumped the fence and he told us he wanted to pitch against us.

"I hit a shot, but he still caught it. It was the best thing. It was awesome."

Puig and the Dodgers were eliminated from post-season play Oct. 18 in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series against St. Louis.
