A proposal for additional reward money was announced Wednesday in the animal abuse case of a dog that died after it was slammed to the pavement by a man in Boyle Heights.

The news conference regarding the $10,000 reward leading to the arrest and conviction of the man is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. A motion by Councilman Paul Koretz calls on the city to match funds already offered by several non-profit groups. bringing the total reward $20,000.

"Twenty thousands dollars may seem like a large reward for the death of a small animal, but the reward is for catching a violent criminal," said Koretz. "Make no mistake about it. There's plenty of indication that people who commit violence toward animals move on to commit violence toward people."

The motion will be up for a City Council vote on Friday.

Judie Mancuso, Social Compassion in Legislation president, said additional reward money is possible. Geezer Butler, of heavy metal rock band Black Sabbath, on Wednesday offered $2,500 in addition to money already provided by Davey's Voice and PETA, Mancuso said.

"We stand together because this cruelty is not acceptable," said Mancuso.
