The California Dream didn't have a lot to offer Bonnie, a 1-year-old husky. It's back to her kind of weather.

Bonnie was stolen from an airman's backyard on Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota. That was Nov. 1.

The dog somehow ended up 1,700 miles away, which explains how the dog wasn't found after a search that involved almost everyone on the air base. A much thinner Bonnie was found a few months later, wandering the streets of LA.

"It was pretty much a big shock on how she ended up 1,700 miles away," said Racheal Conley, Bonnie's owner.

Workers at LA Animal Services were pleased to learn she was microchipped. The chip allowed Animal Services to track down Bonnie's owners.

"The greatest thing about a microchip is if you keep it current we can backtrack, find out who you are, where you are, and give you a call," said Capt. Wendell Bowers, of LA Animal Services. "We couldn't believe she came from North Dakota."

Bowers has a son serving in the Air Force in Wyoming. He plans to pay for the dog's flight. The microchip company agreed to reimburse him for the airfare.

Bonnie's flight departed LAX early Wednesday. She's scheduled to land Wednesday night -- after several stops -- in Minot, where the overnight low will be a more husky friendly 18 degrees.

A couple of theories regarding how Bonnie ended up in LA made the rounds at LA Animal Services. Some say she's really a beach dog in sled dog clothes, others suggested she made a wrong turn en route to the Iditarod.
