If you think you will live longer by not drinking, you may be wrong. A new study says moderate drinkers may actually live longer than those who don't drink at all.
Researchers at the University of Texas followed 1,824 former and current drinkers aged 55 to 65 for the two decades. According to WebMD, the study showed a significantly reduced mortality risk in people with moderate alcohol consumption compared to those that didn't drink.
The study defined moderate drinking as having between one and two drinks per day.
The study's authors stressed that heavy drinking (more than 2 drinks) can still be dangerous, leading to alcoholism and serious health problems.
The findings will appear in the November 2010 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research.
