Drug Smugglers Caught With Meth in Their Underwear at LAX

Three French nationals were caught at a checkpoint at LAX on Sunday

Three suspected drug smugglers caught with nearly five pounds of methamphetamine valued at $27,000 in their underwear and carry-on luggage were arrested at LAX, authorities said.

The trio, French nationals, were caught Sunday while trying to pass through a TSA security checkpoint at the international terminal at LAX, according to a news release from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

They were planning to smuggle the drugs to French Polynesia, officials said.

"Crystal methamphetamine, which is highly addictive and causes irreversible damage to the body, continues to be a popular choice for smugglers," said Carlos C. Martel, Director of Field Operations in Los Angeles in the news release.

The case broke when agents stopped a French citizen when he tried to pass through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint with nearly four pounds of crystal methamphetamine in two packages near his groin and upper thigh, officials said.

Two suspected accomplices, both women, who had already aboard their flight were arrested after agents found crystal methamphetamine in their carry-on bags. One had a package of drugs in her bra, authorities said.
