EBT Cards Must Be Accepted at All Certified Farmers Markets in LA: City Council

The Los Angeles City Council approved an ordinance on Wednesday requiring that Electronic Benefit Transfer cards used to issue food stamp benefits to recipients must be accepted at all certified farmers markets in the city.

Under the ordinance, EBT acceptance by a vendor will be a condition of approval for all of the city's 58 certified farmers markets.

"The city of Los Angeles has neighborhoods that are 'food deserts,' where it is difficult for residents to access fresh food and produce," said Councilman Jose Huizar. "No child should be denied access to foods that will benefit their health and ensure a strong and healthy life, no matter where they live."

Huizar's office said the new policy will help low-income people have access to healthy food, and that since the policy was first proposed in 2016, participation among operators has reached a nearly 100 percent voluntary compliance rate in accepting EBT as payment.
