Magnitude-2.9 Quake Shakes Compton Area

Weak shaking was reported in Compton, Lynwood, Gardena, Long Beach and other areas

A magnitude-2.9 earthquake was reported Monday morning near Compton.

The quake, initially reported as magnitude-3.2, occurred at 9:05 a.m. about two miles southwest of Compton. Weak shaking was reported in Compton, Lynwood, Gardena, Long Beach and other areas.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake was near the Newport-Inglewood Fault, which extends from Culver City to Newport Beach before reaching into the Pacific Ocean. In March 1933, the magnitude-6.4 Long Beach Earthquake occurred in the fault zone, resulting in 120 deaths and $50 million in property damage, according to the Southern California Earthquake Data Center.
