The shooting took place about 5:15 p.m. in the 23900 block of Wildwood Lane in Crestline, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
Arriving deputies found Michael Paul Clark, 38, of Crestline with a gunshot wound. He was taken to St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino, where he was pronounced dead.
Deputies took 53-year-old Steve Baumgartner of Crestline into custody in connection with the shooting. He was booked for murder, San Bernardino sheriff’s officials said.
Homicide investigators said the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute between the neighbors.
Baumgartner last worked for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in 1998, a department official told NBC4.
