Metro's Night-Owl Hours Begin Friday

LA-area residents will have till about 2 a.m. weekends to use Metro services

Los Angeles-area residents looking to stay out later on Friday and Saturday nights can take advantage of extended Metro Rail services, which will officially launch this weekend.

The Metro will run until after 2 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings, marking a significant extension from its previous service schedule.

The change means last call at area bars will roughly coincide with service's last trains.

The final trains leaving downtown's Union Station will now depart about two hours later than they used to.

The longer hours will apply to the Red and Purple line subway, Orange Line buses and the Blue, Expo, Green and Gold Line trains.

"More people can go out to eat, drink and have fun on weekends without worrying about a midnight curfew, and more workers now have the option of taking that later shift and can rest assured they’re going to have a safe, reliable way to make it home," said Metro board chairman and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich.

Speaking at a press event in Pasadena Friday morning, according to Metro's The Source blog, Antonovich said the agency wants to continue the "momentum" of the new late-night offerings.

Art Leahy, chief executive officer of Metro, said the MTA board will evaluate how frequently the late-night services are used before deciding whether to add extended hours for weeknights as well.

Metro is also considering offering late-night service on the Silver Line bus and is working with Metrolink -- a commuter rail system -- on a possible plan to connect with Metro Rail and the Orange Line.
