A man in Santa Ana was apparently wounded by a falling bullet shot into the air shortly after midnight, police said.

The man, whose name was withheld, was hit in an ankle while in the 800 block of South Huron Drive, Santa Ana police Cmdr. Stephen Colon said.

Police learned of the injury when they were notified by hospital personnel about 2 a.m., he said.

Despite the incident, Colon said reports of gunfire around midnight seemed "much lighter" this year.

In 1999, a young man was killed by a falling bullet in Los Angeles.
