Family Escapes Fire at San Bernardino County Home

A family of six and two dogs escaped a burning home Saturday morning in northern San Bernardino County.

The family's young son woke up to smoke and alerted his father, who felt his way through a smoke-filled hallway to get the rest of his family out of the single-story house, according to firefighters. Two dogs also escaped the fire in the 13700 block of Benton Street in the desert community of Trona.

"Feeling his way through the home, the father began evacuating his family, at times carrying them through the blaze," the San Bernardino County Fire Department said in a statement.

The father and his wife suffered second-degree burns. Their four children suffered first-degree burns. None of the injuries appear to be life-threatening, according to the fire department.

Firefighters extingiushed the fire in about 25 minutes, but the home was destroyed. A cause was not immediately determined.
