Family, Friends Mourns Teen Shot, Killed by Police

Police say the teen left behind a suicide note, something loved ones called "out of character."

Family and friends mourned the death of a 17-year-old teen who was killed by police after allegedly pointing a gun at cars and people in Ontario.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon at South Archibald Avenue and East Riverside Drive, when police responded to a call about a male waving a gun at people and pointing it at cars.

The teen, identified as Raul Herrera, had allegedly robbed a Jack In The Box before he was located, police said. After a confrontation with police, Herrera was shot by officers and later died at a hospital.

According to family, Herrera excelled at school, played sports and graduated early. He was also described as a "gentle person."

"I don't have any tears left. Single parent, I thought I raised him correctly. I don't know where I went wrong," said Joe Herrera, the teen's father.

Police say the teen left behind a suicide note, something loved ones called "out of character."

"He went out with the intention of hurting one person and one person only. Unfortunately that was himself. It's a tough loss for everybody," said Jed Kelley, a family friend.

Joe Herrera's thoughts were also with the Ontario cops. who faced off with his troubled son.

"I know they are hurting, I know their families are hurting," said Joe Herrera. "I'm praying for them. I want them to know, absolutely no hard feelings whatsoever."

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on leave and were offered counseling.
