Family of Cold Case Murder Victim “Really Happy” Suspect Has Finally Been Captured

Eduardo Rodriguez had been on the run for more than a decade since allegedly gunning down Marjorie Mendoza as she sat in a car with a rival gang member in Atwater Village in 2001.

The family of a cold case murder victim whose alleged killer was finally caught Thursday said the arrest had brought them "closure."

Eduardo Rodriguez had been on the run for more than a decade since allegedly gunning down Marjorie Mendoza as she sat in a car with a rival gang member in Atwater Village, Los Angeles in 2001.

He was captured in Riverside after a detective tracked him down through Facebook, and the mother-of-three’s parents are happy the man investigators believe is the culprit is now off the street.

"We tried to move on, we tried to move on. I can't do anything, so hopefully, you know. I'm really happy right now that they got the second guy,” her father Jesse Mendoza said.

Her father had believed another man, Timothy McGhee, had been the person responsible for his daughter’s death at the age of just 26.

At the time Rodriguez was charged with the crime by the Los Angeles Police Department he was second in command of the Toonerville criminal street gang under  McGhee, according to Laura Vega of the U.S. Marshals Service. The syndicate spreads across Atwater Village, Glendale and Tujunga, according to law enforcement.

Rodriguez, also known as Juan Carlos Campos Gamino, disappeared soon after he was indicted in 2003 on four counts of homicide, the others also occurring in Atwater Village, and two counts of attempted homicide. The LAPD listed him as one of its most wanted fugitives.

"At least there's a closure, because I thought first it was Timothy McGhee, so it was quiet already and if they found the other guy suspected in the killing, then we're just happy," her step-mother Claire Mendoza said.

Mendoza’s family were too afraid to show their faces because of the gang-related ties to the case, however they said Marjorie, had a life full of promise ahead of her as a mother-of-three who was looking forward to a career.

“Marjorie was a good mother," Jesse said.

Neighbors said they still remember the day Mendoza was killed, and hope the families of all his alleged victims get justice.

"I think it's great that there's finally justice that's served on this guy and hopefully he pays for everything he's done, not just this family but the other families he got," local resident Ashley Reyes said.

The other shooting deaths were reported as being carried out execution style, with three victims sitting inside a car double-parked on a street in Atwater Village.
