Mother Could Face Charges in Fatal Freeway Crash

CHP officials say the mother of two young girls who died in a car crash Monday could face charges, but would not go into detail. The woman was driving with four young children when the vehicle rolled off the 710 Freeway Monday. She and a young boy were listed in critical condition, and another boy suffered minor injuries. Lolita Lopez reports from Long Beach Memorial Hospital for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Sept. 3, 2012.

Two girls, ages 2 and 6, were killed Monday morning in a crash on the northbound Long Beach (710) Freeway, south of Imperial, and their mother, who was driving at the time of the 9 a.m. crash, could face charges, officials said.

A CHP news release reported the youngest girl as being 4 years old, but the girl's aunt told NBC4 News that the youngest victim of the crash was 2.

The girls’ mother was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon, according to Monica Posada with California Highway Patrol (CHP).

A 5-year-old boy was also listed in critical condition. An 8-year-old boy suffered minor injuries, Posada said. Both remained hospitalized Monday afternoon.

Officials say the group was wearing their seat belts when the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and rolled over off the freeway, falling roof-first into a tree.

Charges are pending against the driver, according to a CHP official, who could not go into detail and added that this is a "delicate situation."
