Passengers tackle a man claiming to have a bomb on a plane bound for Los Angeles.

No bomb was found and after questioning by the FBI and airport police, investigators concluded the man should undergo a psychological evaluation, said FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

Delta Air Lines Flight 110 from Atlanta was only minutes from landing at Los Angeles International Airport shortly before 10:30 a.m. when the man "jumped up and started running ... (and) yelled 'I've got a bomb,"' said passenger Bruce Worrilow.

"This guy goes rushing down the aisle and the flight attendant is running after him. He's yelling for help," Worrilow said. "The flight attendant called the cockpit and said, 'This is a serious situation here.' The guy was yelling, 'I have a bomb. I have a bomb.'"

"He kept saying, 'I got a bomb,' and then he rushed to the emergency exit. That's when I cut him off and tackled him. It was like a football pile-up. Others jumped on top of him. Someone yelled, 'Grab his hands,'" Worrilow said.

A flight attendant then used plastic ties to bind the man.

The man was not arrested by the FBI but was expected to be turned over to Los Angeles police. Eimiller said the incident was not a federal matter but the man could face a state charge.

The plane had 271 passengers aboard, Delta spokeswoman Betsy Talton said from Atlanta.

  • Mike C Thursday, Jan 8 at 12:35 PM FLAG COMMENT My name's not Lucy but to "'splain" to Linda S., the plastic devices were plastic ties like those used by law enforcement to bind rowdy suspects when handcuffs are not available. Of course, flight attendants don't carry handcuffs around...(unless they're active members of a variation on the Mile High Club!)
  • Kat Thursday, Jan 8 at 6:53 AM FLAG COMMENT A high five to the airline passengers who took this guy down. Since 9/11 people have learned that they can't remain passive in the face of any danger. Attention potential terrorists - you try to take us down - you are going to pay the price - not just from our government, but from the people themselves!
  • This is good news Wednesday, Jan 7 at 8:32 PM FLAG COMMENT ...it appears that everyone has gotten the memo that it is no longer smart to just sit around and do nothing, like a sheep, on an airplane when somebody (or a group of sombodies) decide to go nuts. I have always felt that if I was on one of the 9/11 flights, I would have fought like hell against those clowns before I'd let them take over a plane... I'm glad the rest of the USA has gotten the same message. Now, if we could onl ... MORE >
