Fergus, Golden Retriever Injured in Acid Attack, Finds Home

A golden retriever found about six weeks ago suffering from burns after he was attacked with acid has now found a new home.

Fergus was adopted by Calabasas residents Vic and Anngel Benoun -- and the couple plans to have Fergus trained as a therapy dog to help other burn victims.

"I was amazed at just how sweet and how trusting he was after what he'd been through," Vic Benoun said.

Fergus, which is Irish for "powerful," underwent several surgeries to help treat a third-degree burn along his back. He stayed at an animal hospital until he recovered.

"It's an excellent road to recovery, right," said Dr. Alan Schulman, as he spoke to Fergus.

Fergus' injuries were similar to those of six other dogs found in the same area. Authorities were investigating the crimes as a possible string of chemical attacks.

A $50,000 reward was being offered for information leading to the person or people responsible for the attacks.

Anngel said she knew Fergus would start a new life with her family after first learning about his story on NBC4.

"He's going to go to Shriners Children's Hospital and I hope he'll go to burn wards," Anngel said.

Hundreds of applicants expressed interest in adopting Fergus, many from all over the world, after learning about the dog's condition. Barbara Gayle of SoCal Golden Retriever Rescue was pleased with the adoption of Fergus.

"I couldn't have asked for anything better," she said. "What horror happens to you. Whatever your adversity, you can overcome it with grace and dignity and love. I think that's who he is, that who this baby is."
