One Killed in Fiery Four-Car 5 Freeway Collision Involving Sheriff's Deputies

One person died in a fiery multi-car collision involving a sheriff's deputy early Friday on the southbound 5 Freeway in Sun Valley that left debris scattered across the road and prompted an hourslong closure.

The crash was reported just after 3 a.m. near the 5 and 170 freeways, according to the California Highway Patrol. Four cars were involved in the crash.

The driver of a disabled car stopped on the freeway, and other vehicles crashed into it, including the sheriff's department vehicle, the CHP reported. Two deputies were transporting two inmates from the North County Correctional Facility when the collision occurred. Both deputies and inmates were unharmed.

Drivers caught in the morning traffic backup made U-turns and used the Osborne Street on-ramp to exit the freeway. The freeway reopened early Friday afternoon.
