Fire Hydrant Continues to Gush Water in LA

DWP said major construction needs to happen to fix the hydrant

Gallons of water continued to pour out of a fire hydrant by the hour in West Los Angeles on Monday, days after NBC4 first reported the disturbance.

The hydrant, located on the northwest corner of Cadillac Avenue and South La Cienega Boulevard, has leaked three gallons of water per minute into the street by onlookers’ estimates for over a week.

NBC4 contacted the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power on Jan. 6 regarding the matter. However, they were unable to say when the hydrant would be fixed.

The department did shut off the water to the fire hydrant, but a broken valve is causing the leak and major construction needs to happen, DWP shared in an e-mailed statement. Caltrans and the DWP would have to come together to create a construction plan for a permanent solution.

Some DWP customers are not happy to see such large amounts of water go to waste.

“If it doesn’t rain, we need water. We can’t depend always on the river or upstate Northern California,” said one woman familiar with the broken hydrant.

*The fire hydrant was said to be located in West Hollywood in an earlier report. Its correct location is West Los Angeles.
